The Starting Point: A Crowded Smart-Panel Area
The home had been prewired during construction, but the closet also contained the modem, router, gigabit switch, four-bay NAS, UPS battery backup, adapters, and loose patch cables. Adding a recorder and six-camera system without reorganizing the space would have increased clutter and reduced serviceability.

Preparing the Structured Wiring Panel
Existing category and coaxial cables were separated so the active network runs could be routed toward the new equipment rack. Each cable was inspected and tested for continuity, termination quality, condition, and suitability for network and PoE requirements.

Building a Compact 12U Residential Network Rack
The main improvement was a shallow 12U network rack that fit the closet cabinetry while providing a dedicated structure for surveillance and network equipment. The UNVR, gigabit switch, gateway, NAS, router or access point, adapters, and related devices were consolidated into one service area. The UPS remained beside the rack so its controls and display stayed accessible.
